Drive out of Guwahati after dark and you’ll see how uneven street lighting can be. The main road glows. The lane branching off it doesn’t. Grid-powered lights need poles, cables, a metered connection and someone to pay the bill every month, so plenty of village roads, campuses and housing colonies across Assam either stay dark or rely on a few lights that go out with every storm.
A solar street light gets around all of that. The panel, battery and LED sit on one pole, the light switches on at dusk by itself, and nothing has to be connected to the grid.
Quick answer: Solar street light cost in Assam usually runs from ₹8,000 to ₹20,000 for a good 20–40W all-in-one unit, and ₹25,000 to ₹60,000 or more for a pole-mounted, tender-grade system. Cheaper lights exist, but most of them cut corners on the battery. What you should pay depends on road width, pole height, and how many cloudy days in a row the light has to survive.
How much does a solar street light cost in Assam?
“Solar street light” covers everything from a ₹4,000 gate lamp to a ₹60,000 pole system, which is why quotes look so different. Here is how 2026 market pricing generally breaks down.

Treat these as ballpark figures. Poles, foundations and installation are often quoted separately, and brand, battery size and warranty move the price a lot. Ask for a written quote that lists panel wattage, battery capacity and battery chemistry.
Why the price range is so wide
Four things drive most of the gap:
- Battery. A lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) battery costs more than lead-acid but lasts several times longer. Cheap lights often ship with a small or low-grade battery, which is why they fade out well before dawn.
- Panel. A monocrystalline panel with an honest wattage rating charges better in weak light than a low-cost panel with an inflated label.
- Controller. An MPPT controller pulls more energy out of cloudy weather. Basic ones waste it.
- Build quality. Pole material, galvanising, IP rating and anti-theft fittings all add cost.
There’s a useful yardstick from the government itself. MNRE’s specification for a 12W village street light asks for a panel of at least 75Wp and a 12.8V, 30Ah lithium battery with a battery management system. If a “bargain” light claims similar brightness with a far smaller panel or battery, the numbers don’t add up. The MNRE specification page for 12W solar street lights is public, so you can check.
Is there a subsidy?
Sometimes, but rarely for an individual buyer. MNRE’s off-grid programme has funded solar street lights, and North Eastern states have received the highest central support, up to 90% of the benchmark cost in its earlier phases. That money generally flows through state agencies and panchayats. Before you assume a subsidy applies to your purchase, check with the Assam Energy Development Agency (AEDA) or your gram panchayat. Will a solar street light survive Assam’s monsoon?
Guwahati gets well over 1,700 mm of rain a year, and July alone brings several hundred millimetres. Bright sunshine drops to around four hours a day in July, against seven or more in the dry winter months. Solar panels still generate on overcast days, but under thick cloud they typically manage only 10–25% of normal output.
That means a street light in Assam has to be designed around its battery, more than its panel. Look for:
- Two to three days of autonomy. MNRE’s own scheme specifies three days of battery backup for its 12W lights.
- A LiFePO4 battery with a BMS. It handles heat, humidity and deep discharge far better than lead-acid.
- IP65 or higher. This protects the lamp head and controller from driving rain and dust.
- Smart dimming. A light that idles at low brightness and steps up when it senses movement can stretch its battery through a wet week.
- A shade-free spot. Roadside trees in Assam can throw shade over a panel by mid-afternoon. Trim them or move the pole.
What you actually gain
- No trenching or cabling. There’s nothing underground to flood, dig up or damage.
- No monthly electricity bill. Guwahati Municipal Corporation’s own street lights page has put its yearly street-light power bill at around ₹6 crore. A housing society or campus running dozens of poles feels the same pinch on a smaller scale.
- Light during outages. When a storm takes down the local supply, a solar light doesn’t notice.
- Very little upkeep. Wipe the panel now and then and check the pole. There are no wiring faults to trace.
- Fast installation. An all-in-one unit can go up in a few hours.
One honest caveat. If a grid connection already sits next to the pole, a single solar light won’t repay itself through bill savings alone. The savings show up where a connection is costly or unreliable, or where you’re lighting dozens of poles. Do the sums for the whole project, not one lamp.

- Village and panchayat roads with no grid, or with supply that keeps failing
- School and college campuses
- Hospitals, health centres and their approach roads
- Housing societies and apartment complexes: internal lanes, gates and parking
- Temples, community halls, playgrounds and riverside walkways
- Farms, tea estate lanes, factory boundaries and warehouses
How to choose the right light: six checks
- Match the wattage to the road. A 3–4 metre lane is usually fine with 12–18W. A 5–7 metre road tends to need 24–40W. As a rule of thumb, space poles three to four times their height apart.
- Check the panel and battery, not just the LED wattage. Ask for panel Wp, battery voltage and Ah in writing.
- Insist on LiFePO4 with a BMS.
- Look for IP65 or IP66 and a hot-dip galvanised pole. Assam’s humidity eats cheap metal.
- Confirm autonomy. Two days at minimum, with a dusk-to-dawn sensor.
- Read the warranty. Panels carry long warranties, but the complete system often gets only one to four years. Ask exactly what’s covered and who comes to fix it.
